TOEFL

Our Academy teaches TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) using a structured approach that focuses on reading, listening, speaking and writing using a developed curriculum that covers all aspects of the test. First, we familiarize our potential participants with the format of the test, paying particular attention to the scoring system, question types, and time constraints. Before the test, a diagnostic test is conducted to determine the current level of knowledge and skills, identifying strengths and weaknesses in order to meet the individual needs of students. Authentic materials, such as news articles, Ted talks, and academic reports, expose students to a real-life situation in English.

Feedback on student performance, both in class and on practice tests, helps track each student's progress over time. Special emphasis is placed on teaching test-taking strategies such as time management, process of elimination, and guessing techniques to help students feel more confident on test day and maximize their score. We provide ample opportunities for students to practice all 4 aspects of the test equally, both in class and at home.

The new reading section of the TOEFL IBT assesses how well you can read and understand material used in an academic setting.

Includes 20 questions based on 2 reading passages, each approximately 700 words long. Time allocation: 35 minutes.

Reading passages are excerpts from university-level textbooks that will be used in introductions to a topic. The passages cover a variety of topics. Don't worry if you are unfamiliar with the topic of a passage. All the information you need to answer the questions will be included in the passage.

The new TOEFL IBT Listening section is designed to measure your ability to understand conversations and lectures in English. It includes listening for basic understanding, understanding the speaker's attitude and degree of certainty, and connecting information. You will have 28 questions based on 3 lectures and 2 talks. Time Allocation: 30 min You can take notes on each audio item during the test to help you answer questions.

The new TOEFL IBT Speaking section measures your ability to speak English effectively in an academic setting. The four questions/problems resemble real-life situations you may encounter both in and out of the classroom.

Question 1: Independent Speaking Task - requires you to rely entirely on your own ideas, opinions and experiences when answering.

Questions 2–4: Integrated speaking tasks - require you to combine your English language skills - listening and speaking or listening, reading and speaking - just as you would in or out of the classroom.

Preparation time: 15–30 seconds of preparation time before each answer and your answer will be 45 or 60 seconds long.
Speak to answer: To answer, you will speak into the microphone and your answers will be recorded.
Time Allocation: 17 minutes.

The new TOEFL IBT Writing section measures your ability to write in English in an academic setting and present your ideas in a clear, well-organized way.

There are two writing assignments:
Integrated writing task (20 minutes) - read a short passage and listen to a short lecture, then write in response to what you have read and listened to. Word count: at least 150 words.

Academic Discussion Writing Task (10 minutes) — the question simulates a discussion board on a university website. You will see a question posted by the professor and two student responses. Your job is to read everything and then write your own answer. Word account: at least 100 words. You can see questions and answers as you type.
