C1 Advanced Exam Format (CAE)
C1 Advanced is an in-depth test of all areas of language ability. It consists of four papers designed to test your English language skills.
A C1 Advanced qualification shows that you can:
pursue an academic course at university level
communicate effectively at a managerial and professional level
participate confidently in workplace meetings and academic classes and seminars
express yourself with a high level of fluency
The formats below are the same for both paper-based and computer-based exams.
Paper | Content | Purpose |
Reading and using English (1 hour 30 minutes) | 8 parts/ | It shows that you can deal confidently with different types of text, such as fiction, newspapers and magazines. It tests your use of English with different types of exercises that show how well you can control your grammar and vocabulary. |
Writing (1 hour 30 minutes) | 2 parts | You create two different texts, such as essays, letters/emails, proposals, reports and reviews. |
Listening (about 40 minutes) | 4 parts/ | It tests your ability to follow and understand a range of spoken material, such as interviews, radio broadcasts, presentations, conversations and everyday conversations. |
Speaking (15 minutes per pair of candidates; 23 minutes per group of three) | 4 parts | It shows how good your spoken English is as you engage in conversation by asking/answering questions and discussing topics. Your speaking test will be face-to-face with one or two other candidates and two examiners. One of your examiners talks and the other examiner listens. This makes your test more realistic and more reliable |
