B2 First (FCE)

A B2 First certificate proves that you have the language skills to live and work independently in an English-speaking country and/or study in courses taught in English.

A B2 First qualification shows that you can:
communicate face-to-face, effectively expressing opinions and arguments
follow and understand the news
write clear and detailed English, expressing opinions and explaining the pros and cons of different points of view on the issue.
write letters, reports and many other types of texts.

The formats below are the same for both paper-based and computer-based exams.

Reading and Use of English (1 hour 15 minutes)

It shows that you can deal effectively with different types of text, such as fiction, newspapers, magazines. The tasks are intended to reveal how well you can control your grammar and vocabulary.

Writing
(1 hour 20 minutes)

Two different pieces of writing, such as reviews, essays, letters, are required

Listening
(about 40 minutes)

4 parts/
30 questions

Two different pieces of writing, such as reviews, essays, letters, are required

Speaking 

(14 minutes per pair of candidates; 20 minutes per group of three)

It reveals how good your spoken English is as you engage in conversation by asking/answering questions and discussing topics. The speaking test is face-to-face with one or two other candidates and two examiners. One examiner talks to you and the other examiner, as the head assessor, listens.
